Our History

Dr. Faltyn and Dr. Murphy first met and worked with each other in 2003. In 2013, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase a practice near their homes in East Vancouver. They are excited to continue offering the compassionate care that this clinic has offered since 1946.

Hartneys1To our valued clients,

With a combination of sadness and excitement, I write to formally say goodbye to our many clients and friends as Loretta and I move into another chapter of our lives, often referred to as retirement. After thirty-eight years of working with wonderful clients and their pets, watching families, and in turn treating the pets of children and grandchildren, leaving Blue Cross Pet Hospital is difficult. We have shared many good memories, lots of laughter as well as shared sadness as a family. Your patronage and generosity over the years has made our chosen careers the very best one we could have ever dreamt and for which Loretta and I will forever be indebted.

Blue Cross Pet Hospital began in 1946 by Dr. Jack Steele, who was succeeded by Dr. Jack Sheehan and then by Dr. Bill Steele, our predecessor, and throughout its history, the owners have endeavoured to deliver the highest possible veterinary care in an empathetic and compassionate manner. The decision to retire and select your replacement was a decision we considered serious and with respect for the trust placed in the practice by our clients. In handing over the ship’s wheel to Dr. Monica Faltyn and Dr. Fidel Murphy, we have continued the tradition of keeping our clients’ needs and requirements in mind.

Dr. Faltyn is East Vancouver born and raised, having initially graduated from UBC and subsequently received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. Dr.Faltyn has been providing professional veterinary services to numerous veterinary clinics located in the Vancouver area, including Blue Cross Pet Hospital, for several years as she waited for the right career opportunity.

Dr. Murphy is originally from Montreal. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of PEI, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College also located in PEI. Like Dr. Faltyn, Dr. Murphy has been providing professional veterinary services on the North Shore. Dr. Murphy lives within the East Village community.

Both Loretta and I are thrilled to introduce Monica and Fidel to our practice and feel comfortable that these two skilled and experienced veterinarians will carry on with the long-standing veterinary care and client commitment.

We were most fortunate to have as our trusted support team Brenda and Kara, both of whom were as committed to and supported Loretta and me in the delivery of the highest possible health care and client communications. Monica and Fidel inherit a wonderful team to whom we owe much appreciation.

Our moving forward would not be complete without extending much appreciation to Dr. Dirk van der Walt and the team of locum doctors who served our clients over the past two years as I recovered from an injury. My long road to recovery was made easier by knowing of their commitment to the practice and the clients.

We will miss our many clients, our experiences and shared passion for the health care of our adopted children for which we again express our gratitude and appreciation.

Dan and Loretta Hartney
